Whether you're preparing for your first driving lesson or just brushing up on the rules before taking your test, this FAQ section answers the most common questions about learner driver insurance in the UK.
It's a short-term insurance policy designed to cover provisional licence holders while they're practising driving.
You are eligible for Learner Driver Insurance, if...
You can insure a car owned by you, or a car owned by a friend or family member – subject to meeting the policy terms.
You will need to pay the first £250 towards any claim.
No, claims made on your policy won't impact their bonus.
A no-claims discount (NCD), or no-claims bonus, is a count of the number of years during which someone hasn't made a claim on their car insurance policy.
Its worth varies from insurer to insurer, but an NCD of five years or more, for example, could give someone 60-75% discount on their motor insurance premium. If you were insured on their policy as a learner driver and had an accident, you would affect that person's NCD and possibly future discounts on their premium.
It won't affect your parent's motor insurance at all! Our policy is a temporary risk policy on the learner driver. Dual Insurance occurs when, in the case of insurance against loss or damage, the same items are insured against a certain risk under more than one insurance policy. Cover is only provided under our policy for drivers who hold a provisional UK licence and are not named in the main insurance policy covering the vehicle.
Policies are short-term, ranging from 7 days to 24 weeks.
Yes, once your policy is approved, you're covered instantly.
Yes, but short-term policies don't usually offer refunds.

Typically, you'll need to buy a new policy once the current one expires.
You must have a qualified driver in the passenger seat. They must be at least 25 years old, a UK resident for a minimum of 2 years and with a current UK driving licence, held for at least three years. They must not have any DR-coded motoring convictions for drink- or drug-related offences in the last five years.

Yes, they must be clearly displayed at the front and back while driving.
Yes, in emergencies or after you pass your test, the supervisor can drive the car home.
Yes, but the car owner needs to have their own insurance in place, and you can get your own separate policy.
The policy only covers you as the named driver. However each learner driver can have their own policy and practise in the same car.
If you are not the registered owner and keeper of the insured vehicle, and your parents are, then your parents must have their own valid motor insurance policy in force.
Yes, you are covered to take the test. However, as soon as you pass, your learner driver policy will stop and it will not cover you to drive your vehicle home. Please see the question 'What happens when I pass my driving test?'.
Once you pass your driving test all cover stops and you must purchase separate motor insurance to continue driving the car. You cannot drive home from the test centre under this policy. This policy does extend to cover the person supervising you to drive the insured vehicle for a specific journey after you have successfully completed your practical driving test.
Provided you are 21 or under at the inception of the cover then that is acceptable.
Sorry, no.
No. Cover is only available for learner drivers aged 17-21.

Your policy provides up to £200 for required medical treatment if there's an accident.

As with all insurance policies, there are certain things that are not covered. The main exclusions will be shown in the policy summary document or you can view a copy of the full policy terms and conditions. Both are available to see when you get a quote. Just remember: racing, off-road driving, carrying hazardous goods, or driving after you've passed your test are not covered.
