The End of the Road (For Your L-Plates and Your Policy)
One of the most common questions we hear is: “When exactly does my learner driver insurance end?”
Whether you’ve got a test date looming or you’ve just passed (congrats!), it’s crucial to understand when your cover expires – because continuing to drive without valid insurance is a big no-no.
The Short Answer?
Your learner driver insurance ends the moment you pass your practical driving test.
Yes – even if you’re still in the test centre car park. If you're behind the wheel and not covered by a suitable post-test policy, you're technically uninsured.
Why the Sudden Stop?
Learner driver insurance is designed specifically for drivers with a provisional licence. Once you pass, that provisional licence becomes invalid and so does your cover. It’s not a case of “it’ll last until the weekend” – the transition is instant.
Can I Drive Home After My Test?
We hate to be the bearers of bad news but… no.
Even if you passed with flying colours and feel on top of the world, you’re not insured to drive yourself home unless you've arranged a separate new driver policy in advance that starts from the moment you pass.
The examiner won’t stop you from driving home – but the police (or worse, your insurer!) definitely might.
So, What Should I Do Instead?
- Ask your supervisor or driving instructor to drive you home.
- Pre-arrange full car insurance to start from your expected pass date/time.
- If using the same car, make sure it’s covered under the new policy.
- If not using the same car, make sure your new policy reflects the vehicle details.
What Happens if I Don't Pass?
No shame here – many don’t pass first time. In that case, your learner driver insurance continues until the end of your chosen policy period. You can continue to practise, revise, and give it another go (we’ve got faith in you).
Final Thoughts
Getting your licence is exciting – but don’t let that buzz distract you from the admin. Driving away from the test centre without valid cover is risky and expensive if you’re caught.
Plan ahead, pass the test, and switch to a full policy. Simple.
