Frequently Asked Questions about Learner Driver Insurance

Section A: General Info

You are eligible for Learner Driver Insurance, if...

  • You are learning to drive and wish to insure a specified vehicle in which you intend to practise.
  • You are aged between 17 and 21.
  • You have been a UK resident for 5 years or more.
  • You have a valid UK provisional licence.
  • You have no previous or pending convictions or driving disqualifications.
  • You have no previous or pending accidents or claims.
  • You have no previous or pending criminal convictions.

You can insure a car owned by you, or a car owned by a friend or family member – subject to meeting the policy terms.

A no-claims discount (NCD), or no-claims bonus, is a count of the number of years during which someone hasn't made a claim on their car insurance policy.

Its worth varies from insurer to insurer, but an NCD of five years or more, for example, could give someone 60-75% discount on their motor insurance premium. If you were insured on their policy as a learner driver and had an accident, you would affect that person's NCD and possibly future discounts on their premium.

It won't affect your parent's motor insurance at all! Our policy is a temporary risk policy on the learner driver. Dual Insurance occurs when, in the case of insurance against loss or damage, the same items are insured against a certain risk under more than one insurance policy. Cover is only provided under our policy for drivers who hold a provisional UK licence and are not named in the main insurance policy covering the vehicle.

Section B: Policy duration, purchase and documentation

Section C: Driving and Practise Rules

You must have a qualified driver in the passenger seat. They must be at least 25 years old, a UK resident for a minimum of 2 years and with a current UK driving licence, held for at least three years. They must not have any DR-coded motoring convictions for drink- or drug-related offences in the last five years.

Section D: Test Day and Age-Based Questions

Once you pass your driving test all cover stops and you must purchase separate motor insurance to continue driving the car. You cannot drive home from the test centre under this policy. This policy does extend to cover the person supervising you to drive the insured vehicle for a specific journey after you have successfully completed your practical driving test.

Section E: Exclusions and Claims

As with all insurance policies, there are certain things that are not covered. The main exclusions will be shown in the policy summary document or you can view a copy of the full policy terms and conditions. Both are available to see when you get a quote. Just remember: racing, off-road driving, carrying hazardous goods, or driving after you've passed your test are not covered.
